THE CITY
The Royal and Illustrious Brotherhood of Our Father Jesus from Nazareth is the oldest of the four brotherhoods in Cartagena. It was founded in the early years of the 17th century. Its Penitents are known as ‘marrajos’ because in its origins whenever the city fishermen caught a marrajo (a fish), it was sold in the Fish Market and the money obtained was given to the Brotherhood.
Its colour is purple. It organises the processions of Holy Monday, the Holy Meeting in the early morning of Good Friday, the Holy Burial in the evening of Good Friday, and Christ’s Vera Cruz on Easter Saturday. Each of them has its own peculiarities.
In this way, on Monday the people form Cartagena fulfil the promises made along the year to the Virgin of Mercy or to the Virgin of la Caridad, the patron saint. Both share a similar iconography and the people identify one with the other.
The early morning of Good Friday has two very interesting moments: the departure of Our Father Jesus from Nazareth from the Fish Market in Santa Lucía and the Meeting, in La Merced Square, of Jesus and our Lady of Sorrows.
That of the Holy Burial is the Great procession of the Brotherhood, having twelve floats, whereas on Saturday, the procession is more austere. Penitents and floats in this later one walk only lit by candles
